How did Rafael Bernal's cult masterpiece, El complot mongol (1969) come to influence today's post-policiaco authors? Filiberto García, the novel's protagonist/anti-hero, for one, is reappearing in contemporary novels still very much alive 50 years later.
Presenter Biography

Joseph M. Towle is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the Department of Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies at Augsburg University. He earned his PhD in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Languages, Literatures, and Cultures from the University of Minnesota. He teaches Latin American literatures and cultures, Latin American Noir and Detective Fiction, and Latin American Science Fiction. His research areas also include Latin American revolutions and social movements, the Zapatistas, and human rights with a particular focus on contemporary Mexican literatures and cultures, specifically on the postpoliciaco and novela negra in Mexico. He is the editor Sunny Places for Shady People: El post-policiaco mexicano (Artificios, 2018).
