His research focuses primarily on the intersection of suffering and humor in relation to sociocultural and historical phenomena. He is also a trained clown, playwright, and San Diego’s eighth-funniest stand-up comedian. Knox will discuss the contradictory nature of clowns—constantly in pursuit of joy and fun, but in this pursuit, revealing instances of pain and suffering. This talk will combine personal experiences in clowning and comedy with a brief examination of ways in which clowns can help us combat social ills.
