Abstract

This presentation will address the significance of the interrelationships between words and imagery in the work of several contemporary artists currently on exhibit at the Palm Springs Art Museum including works by Jeffrey Gibson and Ed Ruscha among others.

Presenter Biography

Sharrissa Iqbal is associate curator of modern and contemporary art at the Palm Springs Art Museum (PSAM), specializing in twentieth-century American art with a focus on California abstraction. Iqbal holds a PhD in Visual Studies from the University of California, Irvine. Sharissa Iqbal has curated numerous special and permanent collection exhibitions and received a Getty Pacific Standard Time grant for research, publication, and exhibition for Particles and Waves: Southern California Abstraction and Science 1945-1990 (9/14/2024—2/23/2025, PSAM).
