As the cultural landscape continues to evolve, there is an increasing recognition of the importance of diversifying classical literature to resonate with contemporary audiences. Panelists will delve into the intricacies of bringing early modern Spanish theater to modern audiences and practitioners, examining the challenges and opportunities inherent in this process,

As the cultural landscape continues to evolve, there is an increasing recognition of the importance of diversifying classical literature to resonate with contemporary audiences. This round table panel aims to explore the transformative power of translation and adaptation in bringing classic works to new and diverse audiences. By examining the challenges and opportunities inherent in this process, panelists will delve into the intricacies of bringing early modern Spanish theater to modern audiences and practitioners.

The panelists will present on a variety of projects currently underway in the UCLA Working Group in Translation and Performance, including the adaptation series Golden Tongues, where local playwrights adapt Golden Age Spanish theater to a modern Los Angeles, and the children’s book project, which focuses on developing materials for young audiences. Moreover, the panel will explore the role of technology and multimedia platforms in expanding the reach of classical works to broader demographics, particularly younger audiences.

This round table discussion will provide insight into the best strategies for embracing the richness of diverse perspectives and narratives so that we can ensure that classical literature remains vibrant and relevant in an ever-changing world.
