This session explores the multifaceted world of Spanish and Portuguese literature, film, and cultural studies within the Iberian Peninsula. We welcome submissions that engage with a broad range of topics, which may include those that center on the experiences of traditionally otherized communities, including (but not limited to) the Gypsy/Romani and Afro-Hispanic populations, gender studies, issues on immigration and emigration, political ideologies, poverty studies, violence, motherhood, masculinity and more.

Our session aligns with the 2024 PAMLA Conference theme, “Translation in Action,” by encouraging but not requiring panelists to examine how narratives are constructed, disseminated, and challenged across various mediums. We encourage proposals that explore the act of translation itself, considering its role in shaping cultural understanding.

Topics of particular interest include but are not limited to:
• Representations of Identity: How do cultural productions portray and challenge ideas of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and class within the Iberian Peninsula?
• Historical and Contemporary Narratives: How do film, literature, and other cultural forms grapple with historical events and shape contemporary perspectives in Spain and Portugal?
• Marginalized Voices: What roles do marginalized communities play in shaping cultural narratives within the Peninsula?
• The Power of Translation: How does translation influence the transmission and reception of cultural narratives across languages and borders?
• Truth and Representation: How do concepts of truth, misinformation and disinformation intersect with cultural narratives in the Iberian world?
