This session explores the vibrant landscape of global adaptation studies, with a specific focus on cinema, literature, and media from the Middle East, South Asia, and the Mediterranean. Rather than treating adaptations as mere copies, this panel investigates how cross-cultural adaptations function as "second originals"—dynamic, autonomous texts that reshape their source materials across different linguistic, geographical, and historical contexts.
We invite proposals from fields including comparative literature, film and media studies, translation studies, and postcolonial theory that examine the mechanics of cultural translation and adaptation. By centering the Middle East, South Asia, and the Mediterranean, this panel seeks to challenge Eurocentric models of source-text fidelity and celebrate the creative autonomy of global adaptations. Topics may include cinematic retellings of classical literature, cross-media adaptations (such as literature to digital media), and the political or social impacts of rewriting texts across borders.
Note: To ensure a focus on non-Western reception, all proposals must analyze adaptations produced or received within the Mediterranean, Middle East, or South Asia. The "source" text being adapted may, but need not, originate from the Anglo-American or European tradition (e.g., a South Asian cinematic retelling of a British novel).
